Pyatigorsk State University Celebrates its 80th Anniversary
11.10.2019In August 1939 a four-year pedagogic and two-year teacher institute was formed in Pyatigorsk by an order of the Council of People’s Commissars of RSFSR. That was the beginning of a new higher educational facility, which transforming and modernizing year by year has grown into one of the most famous universities of the region, and has occupied leading ranking positions among Russian and world universities.
At present Pyatigorsk State University is one of the oldest institutions of the Russian South with its rich history and glorious traditions. More than 4,500 students of higher and secondary vocational education, master’s, and postgraduate students, and interns study at PSU, as well as about 2,000 students of the life-long education system from 71 region of Russia and 38 foreign countries.
2019 for Pyatigorsk State University has been marked by a significant historic event. Festive events to celebrate the anniversary have been held for a whole year and culminated in fall. Within a month the university had a whole range of concerts, organized by the active students of the Institutes and Higher School of PSU. Congratulations to the alma mater sounded from the stage. More than 400 representatives of teaching staff, university employees, and the best students were awarded different prizes.
On October 11, a terminating ceremonious event was held in a big hall of the university. The anniversary gathered a lot of guests including authorities representatives, leading scientists, politicians, public persons, and other famous people, who have long-term connections with PSU.
Aleksandr Anatolievich Matovnikov, Plenipotentiary of the Russian President in the North Caucasus Federal District, Hero of Russia, personally congratulated the university staff and handed over the Gratitude of the Government of the Russian Federation “For Excellence in Education and Training of High-Qualification Specialists”, signed by Dmitry Medvedev, Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation on September 20, 2019.
“The university graduates work in different fields. At present there is an opportunity to study here 24 languages, there are 16 cultural centers. More than 2,000 foreign students from 61 countries have graduated the university in recent 50 years. They became true ambassadors of the Russian Caucasus abroad. PSU Diploma is an education quality warranty. And the most important thing is that the university grows true patriots of our motherland. I congratulate teaching staff, officers, students, and graduates of Pyatigorsk State University on its 80th anniversary with all my heart. There is no doubt that you will continue maintaining the reputation of the university with real work, preserve and develop its traditions, make a significant contribution to the Russian higher school development. I wish for success in new professional achievements, labor, and education for the benefit of our country”, - congratulated the university Aleksandr Matovnikov.
The university and a whole range of its directors were granted the awards of State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Ministries, and Departments of Russia, as well as Embassies of foreign countries and foreign partners.
PSU Rector, Professor Aleksandr Gorbunov in his welcome speech expressed his gratitude for all who congratulated the university on its anniversary and then gave an overview of the rich history of the university, told about the main value of PSU and its scientific and innovative potential: “At present, representatives of 71 regions of the Russian Federation study in our university, our graduates live and work in more than 120 countries of the world. PSU today is the center of state and social interaction, interethnic and interconfessional cooperation. The university aims at opening the world for its students. We are a big multinational family which lives in a creative atmosphere, respecting all peoples, and enjoying languages and cultures. We are the university that opens and transforms the world. But we have to remember, that the university existence would be impossible without having an experience of previous generations and those giants, who created our history and formed the culture. People are the main value of our university”.
During its history, Pyatigorsk State University was and still is one of the leaders in the training of high-qualified specialists. The university received dozens of welcome letters and telegrams, including a welcome letter of Assitant to President of the Russian Federation Andrey Fursenko: “Dear friends! On behalf of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation and my behalf, I congratulate you on 80th anniversary of Pyatigorsk State University formation”
The university is one of the oldest higher educational facilities of the Russian South. It has gone from being a pedagogic and teacher’s institute to the state university. Big work has been done to increase the list of professions and majors, form and develop a scientific and research block, creation of conditions for academic and scientific activity of students and postgraduates.
A high professional level, postgraduates demand, and their further successful career growth are the doubtless criteria of education quality. I wish you to continue the reputation of a leading University, raising the standards of education, science, and innovations quality”!
An appreciation of the 80-years activity of the university was given by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation S.V. Lavrov. His official congratulation to PSU was read by Maria Kruteneva, Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mineralnye Vody: “Dear Aleksandr Pavlovich! For recent years, the university you head has gained a reputation of authoritative school of high-qualified, world-class specialists training. Institute of International Relations within the PSU system is a multifunctional educational, scientific and research center with a unique for the Russian South school of international safety and geopolitics timely problem studies. Due to the wide international relations, PSU today actively participated in the internationalization of scientific and educational activity, maintaining the reputation of Russian higher school”.

Olga Viktorovna Timofeeva, Deputy Chairman of State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, and Viktor Antonovich Sadovnichiy, President of the Russian Union of Rectors, Rector of M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University sent their video congratulations.
The event gathered more than 30 rectors of leading institutions of the Russian South, as well as from other regions of the country. The warmest congratulations were noted by the hosts: by Academician Vladimir Mikhaylovich Filippov, Rector of the People’s Friendship University of Russia, Nikolay Mikhaylovich Kropachev, Rector of Saint Petersburg State University, Aleksey Vladimirovich Lubkov, Rector of Moscow Pedagogic State University, and others.
The university received congratulations from international organizations. Sir Ngo Duc Manh, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Vietnam Socialistic Republic in the Russian Federation was a dignitary guest. He awarded the university the Friendship Order (for special merits in the strengthening of friendship and cooperation in education and human resources training for the Vietnam Republic) and noted that a lot of students of Vietnam studied in Pyatigorsk University and now work as ambassadors of their country.
The university received more than 20 congratulations from Embassies and Associations, as well as from foreign partner universities, with which PSU has been collaborating for many years: Federal Agency for the Affairs of the Commonwealth of Independent States, compatriots, who live abroad and international humanitarian cooperation; International Association of Tourism Institutions EURHODIP; German Academic Exchanges Service (DAAD); Alliance Francaise Agency (France); Croatian Association of the Russian Language and Literature Lectors; Goethe German National Center; French Embassy, Azerbaijan Embassy; Egypt Embassy; Armenian Embassy; Limoges University (France); Siena and Unicampania Universities (Italy); Pula University (Croatia); Asyut University (Egypt); Selcuk University (Turkey); University of Warmia and Mazury (Poland); Shanghai University; Liaoning University, and Changchun Normal University (China).
The university graduates also expressed their gratitude to Alma-Mater in their collective congratulations. Now they live and work in different parts of the world: Moscow, Saint Petersburg, London, Paris, New York, and other cities.
One more PSU graduate, famous producer, scriptwriter, captain of Pyatigorsk KVN team Semion Slepakov also sent his congratulations: “It was always great and fun at our university… I wish the university the prosperity and bow from the waist to all the lectors who taught me, and now continue making new specialists. In Moscow, we have a whole diaspora of PSU graduates, and we all adore our university and consider it to be the best one!”
On previous days and on the celebration day the university received more than 200 welcoming letters, addresses, and congratulations of different levels, and they continue coming. After the termination of all celebrations, the university will create a memory book for the PSU museum with Awards and Congratulations on the 80th Anniversary of PSU.
As students say, it is a pleasure to study at PSU. It is because of this fact thousands of students from different parts of the world enroll in the university. And for 80 years of its existence, thousands of professionals have graduated from the university, and now they life and work in more than 120 countries of the world. It is nice to know that many years of fruitful work granted our university the glory and respect!
